Missouri Merchant Services and Credit Card Processing

Missouri merchant services should fit how a business accepts payments and manages its records. For example, a food-production supplier may need purchasing-card invoices and authorized ACH, while a Branson attraction may depend on advance bookings and refunds. Meanwhile, a Springfield contractor may collect job deposits and final payments.

Valued Merchant Services helps eligible Missouri merchants review actual processing fees, customer payment needs, merchant accounts, POS, ecommerce and commercial invoicing. Because changing providers can affect existing software, we evaluate what already works before recommending a new processor.

How to Choose Missouri Merchant Services for Your Business

Merchant services are the accounts, processing services and tools used to authorize, settle and reconcile business payments. However, a countertop terminal is only one possible component.

First, determine whether customers pay at a counter, through an online reservation, on a job site or against an invoice. Each method has different needs.

Next, identify which systems must continue working. For instance, replacing a reliable accounting, inventory or booking integration solely to pursue a lower advertised rate may create more expense than it saves.

VMS compares the statement and operating requirements before discussing a change.

Missouri Economic Research

Missouri Merchant Services for Agriculture, Manufacturing and Tourism

The following figures illustrate different parts of Missouri's economy. Because they use different reporting years and economic measures, they should not be added together or treated as processing volume.

Agriculture and Related Industries | 2021 Study $93.7B

Economic Output Contribution

Missouri's Department of Agriculture published a 2021 study estimating $93.7 billion in output from agriculture, forestry and related industries.

Payment relevance: Wholesale suppliers may need purchasing cards, authorized ACH and accurate invoice references.

Missouri Tourism | Fiscal Year 2025 43.2M

Visitors

Missouri's Division of Tourism reported 43.2 million visitors and $21.4 billion in total travel-industry economic impact.

Payment relevance: Attractions and lodging businesses should evaluate reservation, refund and booking costs.

Outdoor Recreation | 2024 Data $10.67B

Contribution to State GDP

University of Missouri Extension estimated a $10.67 billion outdoor-recreation GDP contribution using 2024 economic data.

Payment relevance: Recreation businesses may combine reservations, mobile acceptance and on-site retail.

Sources: Missouri Department of Agriculture, 2021 study ; Missouri Division of Tourism, 2026 report ; University of Missouri Extension .

Interpret the data correctly: The agricultural output figure comes from 2021, while the tourism and recreation figures measure different economic concepts and periods. None is an estimate of payment volume processed by VMS.

Missouri Merchant Services for Wholesale Invoices and ACH

For a wholesale supplier, collecting a payment is only part of the work. Just as important is matching that payment to the correct invoice, customer balance and purchase order.

One Invoice, Two Ways of Collecting

Consider a hypothetical Missouri equipment supplier that sends an invoice for $18,400. The buyer pays a $5,000 authorized card deposit and the remaining $13,400 through an authorized ACH payment.

As a result, the merchant's system should associate both payments with the same invoice and purchase order while retaining each separate settlement reference.

A credit-card settlement may fund on a different date than the ACH payment. A return, adjustment or fee deduction may further change the bank deposits.

However, if a new gateway cannot preserve the records needed to match those payments, an attractive card rate may still lead to a worse accounting process.

What we would verify: Does the buyer require a purchasing card? Can the gateway carry supported commercial-card information? Who controls ACH authorization and return handling? Will the current accounting system recognize both payments correctly?

Missouri Tourism Payments: Bookings, Deposits and Refunds

Missouri merchant services for attractions, lodging, marina services and recreation should account for what happens before, during and after a guest's visit.

Before the Visit

Booking and Deposit Terms

Confirm how deposits are authorized, whether cards are stored through an appropriate secure system, and whether the reservation platform works with the gateway.

During the Visit

Additional Sales and Adjustments

Recreation operators may add equipment rental, merchandise, service charges or other purchases. Each charge should be understandable to the customer and traceable in reporting.

After the Visit

Cancellations and Refunds

A refund does not always reverse every original processing expense. Therefore, review your provider's refund-fee treatment, dispute process and deposit reconciliation.

Decision rule: Compare the complete booking and payment workflow, including year-round software costs. Do not switch a working reservation integration solely because another provider quotes a lower card percentage.

Missouri-Specific Sales and Payment Rules

Missouri Sales Tax, Surcharges and Processing Fees

Missouri's General State Sales Tax

Missouri's general state sales and use tax rate is 4.225% for applicable transactions. Cities, counties and special districts may impose additional local taxes.

Special item and location rules can change the tax treatment. Therefore, verify the location and item before copying another Missouri store's POS tax configuration.

Missouri Department of Revenue: Sales and Use Tax

Truthful Customer Pricing

Missouri Revised Statutes §407.020 addresses deceptive and unfair practices in sales and advertising. However, that statute is not a stand-alone approval of a surcharge or dual-pricing program.

Credit-card surcharges, cash discounts and convenience fees are distinct. Check current legal, card-network, acquirer, signage and receipt requirements.

Missouri Revised Statutes §407.020

Debit and Prepaid Card Restrictions

Ordinary Visa and Mastercard credit-card surcharge programs do not permit surcharges on their debit or prepaid cards. The actual payment-pricing program requires separate compliance review.

Tax Collection Is Not Processing Revenue

A merchant may collect sales tax along with the underlying sale in a card transaction. That does not make the tax a processor markup.

Compare the payment statement with the POS tax report and the amounts ultimately remitted to the state.

Before implementing customer pricing: Confirm the exact program, applicable legal and network rules, debit treatment, processor approval, posted prices and receipts. This is educational information, not legal or tax advice.

Missouri Merchant Questions

Missouri Merchant Services FAQs

How much does credit card processing cost in Missouri?

There is no uniform statewide rate. Costs depend on transaction count, card mix, sales channels, average ticket, account fees and software. A current statement provides the most reliable starting point.

Should a Missouri wholesale supplier accept ACH or purchasing cards?

Check buyer requirements first. Then compare authorized ACH costs and return risk with commercial card fees and supported transaction data. Preserve invoice and purchase-order references.

How should a Missouri business reconcile a card deposit and an ACH balance payment?

Apply both customer payments to the same invoice while retaining each payment's reference and date. Reconcile actual bank funding separately because fees and settlement timing may differ.

What should a Branson attraction check before switching gateways?

Confirm reservation and ticketing compatibility, deposits, refunds, customer authorization, card-not-present fees and year-round software subscriptions.

Does Missouri have one sales-tax rate for every merchant?

No. Missouri's general state rate is 4.225%, while applicable city, county, district and special item taxes vary. Verify each location and sale.

Are all cash discounts or credit-card surcharges automatically compliant?

No. The pricing arrangement must be checked against applicable law, card-network rules, debit restrictions, disclosures and processor requirements.

Can VMS review my statement without requiring me to switch?

Yes. The review is free and no-obligation. VMS may recommend keeping your existing provider.

Where can I find Kansas City-specific payment guidance?

See our Kansas City merchant-services page for restaurant Convention and Tourism Tax, animal-health suppliers and bi-state payment considerations.
